Session 1
Introduction to the Model United Nations
Each group will be assigned a UN former member from year 12 to deliver Session 2 (next week) and chair the first debate.

Each group will be assigned a UN former member from year 12 to deliver Session 2 (next week) and chair the first debate.

Preparation for debating.
Students will be the delegates of several countries. Depends on the group, teacher can assign countries to individuals or pairs, students might want to choose their own selection of country and stay with it for the whole project or might want to change depending on the circumstances or topics.
Once the countries are assigned, students do the following RESEARCH from the country they are representing. Research can be done using IT. Time keeping is extremely important to keep the flow. They can complete or improve research in stages and in different sessions. These are some of the questions to be looked at.

Prepare a power point or a poster on paper answering the following questions (ideally pairs or groups of three).
Share answers as a whole class or through a presentation.
1. Where is the headquarters of the UN Organisation situated?
2. What are the goals of the UN Organisation?
3. How many organs does the UN Organisation include?
4. Can you name any of them?
5. Do the UN use solely (=only) peaceful ways to achieve their aims?
Prove your answer with examples.
6. What organisation was prior to (=existed before) the UN?
7. Why was this organisation dismissed (= stopped working)?
8. Is China a member of the UN?
9. Can you give any additional information on China’s role as a UN member?
10.If you were an ambassador, which country would you represent?
what global problem would you want to discuss in the first place?

For the first 15 minutes, each group will have a UN former member from year 11 to help re-setting the debate. Year 10s who volunteered last week with shadow them and then take over.
Please check cue cards below. (Chairs have a copy)
Help Mats with parliamentary terms will be provided for all delegates (Information is also in booklets).

Write a resolution (optional)
Best delegates (optional)
Each delegate should vote (privatety, on paper) for the 2 BEST delegates (please send Miss Mallo the results of your votes). There will be 2 from each group.

Closing Ceremony, (Best delegates announcements), Feedback

Session 2
Knowing your country
- Where is it in the world and what are its neighbours? Which countries are powerful in its region?
- What system of government does it have and who is its leader? What type of government does it have, e.g. is the government elected or is it a dictatorship?
- Is its economy industrialised or mostly agricultural? What are its main sources of income?
- What is the role of religion in the state? Do all or most of its people belong to the same religion? How tolerant of different religions and beliefs is its government? Are its laws based on religion or is it secular?
- Are there minority groups which are different to the majority because of their race, language or culture? Are these groups treated differently to the majority? Do the minorities have links with similar people in other countries?
- Are there civil conflicts (groups of people within the same country which are violently opposed to each other)? What is the government’s response to this?
- Are there any groups that are fighting to be independent or autonomous?
- What is the country’s history? Was it a colony? What country was its colonial power? Has it had revolutions?
- Is it a developed or developing country? Does it have adequate roads, schools and hospitals? Does it struggle to feed its population? Do most people have jobs? Does it owe money to other countries or is it able to be a lender?
- What is the state of your country’s environment? What is the climate like? Do people have access to fresh water? Are there high levels of pollution? Is your country being affected by global warming?
- What is the political and social position of women and girls? Can they go to school and get jobs? Can they vote for the government and be elected themselves?
- Has the country been guilty of human rights violations? What kinds and to what extent?
- Is it open to contacts with other countries? These contacts could be through tourism, business, schools and universities etc.
- How does the government get on with other countries? Does it cooperate with or is it a member of international groupings, such as NATO, the European Union, the African Union, theCommonwealth or the Non-Aligned Movement?
- Are there individual countries with which it has especially strong ties (or animosity towards)? Who are its competitors and its allies? Major trading partners? Aid donors or recipients? Has it ever fought a way against another country and are there continued bad feelings as a result? Knowing the topic to debate. Once the topic or agenda has been set. Research time on the topic will be necessary and set by delegates.
- What is the problem? How does it affect your country?
- What has your country done to combat the problem?
- What are the various "sides" in the debate?
- Which aspects of the issue are most important to your country?
- If your country is not involved with the issue, how can it become involved?
- How will your country shape the debate at the conference?
- What arguments will other countries make?
- How do the positions of other countries affect your country's position?
- Is there evidence or statistics that might help to back up your country's position?
