Once there was a miller and his three sons.
They were not exactly poor but
they were not exactly rich.
When the miller died he left only three
possessions: his mill, the donkey who
worked the mill and a cat.
The
eldest of the three sons said, “as the most senior son, I will have the
mill”
“And as the second oldest son, I will have the donkey” said the middle
son.
The youngest son wasn’t happy.
“Humph. My two brothers always get the
best stuff”, he complained. “ They earn
their living with that mill and that
donkey.
Even if I eat this black cat, it will only serve me a few
meals”.
Now, the cat was an unbelievably clever and he did not like the sound
of that at all.
So the cat sidled up to his naughty master and said,“ Master,
you don’t want to end
up poor and I don’t want to end up on the yummy menu.
If you give me an empty
sack and a pair of good boots, I will make you
richer than your two brothers put
together”.
The master didn’t know how a
cat could possibly make him rich, but he had nothing
to lose so he
immediately agreed…
This Puss in boots had learned many strange tricks during
his nine lives. He hurried
to a nest of rabbits, took out his sack with
fresh grass and then lay down, playing
dead.
A little bunny, fluffy and snowy cautiously went in the sack. Puss in boots leapt up,
tied the sack
with sack and rushed to the king’s castle.
At the court, he made a very
graceful bow and presented the rabbit to the king,
saying in a loud, elegant
voice.” Your majesty, I bring this present from the
Marquis of
Carabas”.
No one in the kingdom knew who this cat in Boots was or where he
had come from.
Neither did they know the Marquis of Carabas.
But that
wasn’t enough, for Puss in Boots had made up the name that very day!
However,
the king was very pleased and thanked Puss in Boots. From then on, Puss
in Boots caught all manner of gifts for the king, always saying the presents
were
from the Marquis of Carabas.
One day, the king decide to take a trip
through the kingdom with his daughter, the
princess. She was very
pretty.
Even Puss in Boots thought she was beautiful and he normally thought
girls were
quite ugly because they had no whiskers.
On the day of the
trip, Puss in Boots said to his master, “If you want to be richer
than your
brothers go swimming in the lake.
The clever cat waited until he could see
the royal coach approaching the lake and, while his master swam. Puss in boots
hid his clothes. Then he began to cry out,” Help! My master, the Marquis of
Carabas, has been robbed by some bandits! He is drowning!.
The King’s coach
pulled up and the king, on hearing the screams of the Marquis of Carabas, asked
his men to rescue Puss in Boots’ master and clothe him in the finest
robes.
When the princess saw the miller’s son so finely dressed, she thought
he was a real Marquis and fell deeply in love.
